AH. Nothing better than having
a free day here in Lima. You best bet I took advantage of this wonderful day.
First things first however. We had classes at El Sol, and not that El Sol isn’t
fun or anything. I actually love going to El Sol every day, but today we spent
conversation class making a Peruvian classic – Pisco Sours! Yes! I’m about to
eat cement early in the day, but who cares? It’s Friday. Rosa had prepared a
simple recipe for the Peruvian drink. We move into the El Sol kitchen and there
laid the ingredients and tools to make the perfect Pisco Sour. I throw on some
Nicky Jam and we start chopping up limes and cracking eggs. By the end of the
day, we had made a palette of Pisco Sour shots for everyone to try. I may or
may not had more than we were actually given. But I downed about five because
I'm a chemical engineer that believes in recycling waste and doing whatever I can to better the environment.
I leave El Sol in my happy
place, and some of us wanted to try ceviche for the first time. We had heard
that this place in Lima boasted to have some of the best ceviche Lima had to
offer, so we went. We had arrived at the renown Punto Azul for ceviche and we
all sit around to around different types of ceviche. I ordered a mixto, which
is just a mix of different seafoods such as octopus, squid, shrimp, scallops,
etc. I’m mildly allergic to shrimp but
not enough for me not to have the dish. However, for some reason the shrimp in
this ceviche was extremely potent and fishy causing me to start itching almost
immediately. I stopped eating. Not because of the itch, but because I
discovered that I really didn’t like ceviche. But I had to take
some Benadryl regardless which John provided. Fortunately for me, John keeps a
bottle of that stuff around. He’s such a dad.
We leave Punto Azul and some
of us head down to the beach because today we’re going to surf! I’ve surfed
probably like three times in my life before this and it really wasn’t surfing
more like waddling in the water. However, down by the beach, there are a
handful of people who provide surfing lessons for a very low cost. Despite the
already low cost, John, Jake, and I managed to find a man that I call Tito, who
cut us the sweetest deal around. A two-hour surf session for only 50 soles.
Other people were charging that amount for only an hour! Thanks, Tito!
I had just eaten and drank so
I decide to take a seat and let others surf while I digested. And cool enough, my
friend Kate decided to kick back with me and observe the others get trampled by
waves. It was beautiful. Bree had just returned to shore and she gives us the
go ahead to get into the water. Kate and I get ready and immediately started
shredding some waves. We were that good. However, I had my fair share of
getting totally smashed by waves, but overall it was pretty laidback.
I’m totally beat, so I head
back home and just passed out. I take a nice nap then shower to get ready for
the night. A handful of us had planned a night of bowling at Larcomar. It was a
nice and relaxing way to end the free day. I met up with Kathleen and we head
over to Larcomar together because you know – the buddy system. Things get wild
in the streets of Lima at night so you always want to take precautions. We
had arrived to meet everyone at the bowling alley and we go on to enjoy a wonderful
friends’ night out. What a great way to end the day.
